TOUCH & HUGS ARE IMPORTANT FOR ALL HUMAN BEINGS

Why cuddle therapy?

A HEALING TOUCH

Human touch is critical to life, and can be considered as important as air, water and food. Babies need to be held by parents or a caregiver, and as children we look for hugs when we fall and scrape our knees. Adults still need to be touched in appropriate and healthy ways, too. The ancient Chinese are well-known for using touch as part of healing and medicine, and ancient Egyptians are believed to be the first to introduce the benefits of deep tissue massage. In the late 1800's the benefits of human touch were extensively studied in relation to the body's pressure points, and the role that they play in the relief of pain and acute illness.

The ancient arts of healing have diminished, though, with the advancements in technology and medicine. However, as people begin to look towards greener ways of living, some are reverting back to alternative methods of healing to replace the chemical treatments that they have become accustomed to. This includes human touch.
As such, hospitals worldwide have started incorporating therapeutic touch into hospice care.

Studies into the positive healing effects of touch on diseases like cancer, heart disease, endocrine and immune disorders, injuries, pain, post-operative recovery, and psychological disorders are increasing. In one study at St. Clare’s Centre for Complementary Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering Oncology Complementary Medicine Pilot Program, complementary therapies of meditation, healing touch, reflexology, Reiki, massage, and acupuncture were administered to outpatients. Patients who received Reiki or healing touch showed an average reduction in pain by 48 percent.
It has also been found that massage reduces pain in pregnant women and diminishes prenatal depression.

In one study of people who had full knee replacements, those who had healing touch therapy had 30% greater mobility after two days than those who didn’t, suggesting the effectiveness of touch for healing purposes.

Being touched ignites nerve endings in your skin to send messages back to your brain, in the same way that we feel things like pain or heat. Being touched by another person sends signals to your brain that promote feelings of comfort, security and happiness, as well as a decrease in stress hormones and an increase oxytocin.
In a study conducted on young married couples (aged 20-39 years) it was shown that those who spent time massaging each other three time a week, and who actively sought to give more physical touch, had lower blood pressure levels and higher levels of oxytocin. This was especially true for men.

The benefits of human touch are also being trialed for people with cancer. In touch therapy, slight movements of the fingers and palms of massage therapists help to renew the spirit and restore harmony in the bodies of those who are suffering. Results from this include an increased immune system, quicker recovery times following chemotherapy and surgical procedures, relief from depression, and increased circulation.
